Having a Happy Halloween With Your Cat

Halloween can be a fun and festive time of year for many. This might include decorations, candy, parties in the home, trick-or-treaters, etc. With this in mind, there may be things to take into consideration to make it a happy (and safe!) time for your cat(s) as well.  Be sure any decorations are not able to get stuck around your cat’s neck, anything to be chewed and digested, or kicked off and broken. One endearing feature of cats is their sense of curiosity that sometimes needs supervision. ;)Hopefully your cat will not be interested in eating or playing with any candy ready to delight your trick or treaters (or you!), but keep an eye out on its accessibility, especially chocolate as it is toxic to cats.If you have guests over, it might be a good idea to keep your cat(s) in a private room for their comfort, especially if they are not as socially motivated with others, as well as having a barrier to have no route of unintended escape while your guests come and go. Trick or treaters can be [...]

Avoid These Common Easter Dangers for Cats

Here comes Peter Cottontail, hopping down the bunny trail... The Easter Bunny loves cats as much as we do here at Kitty Love Pet Sitting! That's why he wanted to join us in letting you know some Easter related dangers for cats to avoid that are common household items amongst Easter celebrations... 1. Chocolate - Although cats typically don't seek it out, some can be curious with just about anything, so it's best to just have the chocolate stored safely away. Chocolate can be dangerous and cause medical complications, some of which can be serious. Super yummy for us, NOT at all good for our feline fur babies. You can read more about chocolate toxicity here. 2. Fake / Artificial Easter "Grass" - Easter baskets are usually filled with this festive and colorful item. It is delightful for us to look at it so your kitty might be inclined to want to play with it or even attempt to eat it (they do, after all, love to eat actual grass), so please do NOT leave this "grass" anywhere for kitty to find. It is [...]

Easter Lily Dangers and Your Cats

It's time for Easter which is a special holiday celebrated by many beyond the egg hunts and baskets, you might have an Easter lily in your home because they are beautiful and give off an incredible aroma. However, I have found that people are not aware of the unfortunate danger that they pose to your indoor cats. As a pet sitter, I have been into homes with the lilies out for enjoyment of unsuspecting clients and as a precaution I have to the initiative and safely stored them in a safe place out of reach from the cats. (photo credit: Chicago Vet Emergency Center ) There is a possibility the cats would not be interested in playing with or chewing on the plant. However, I do not leave anything to chance. I know how curious cats are and would rather err on the 100% side of caution when it comes to their health and safety. I leave behind an informative flyer to educate the client on the possible dangers of the Easter lily, amongst other lilies. I encourage you to be [...]

Pet Loss – A Year Later

One year ago today, November 14th, was one of the most painful days of my life. I had to say goodbye to my Simon kitty love and help him to Heaven. You can read more about that here. Though it's been a year, some days it still feels like it was yesterday. The memories of that day are burned in my brain and my heart forever. Some days the tears will still bubble up out of nowhere and flow when I think of him. What this tells me about my personal experience of the loss of my pet/my fur baby: I loved him so very deeply. There absolutely still are days when I would give anything to have him back. There are days when I question the decision of was it the right time. But I know it's part of the grief process and there is no timeline for grief. Love didn't die with him. It lives on and on inside my heart. Yes, he was a cat, but love is love! Time eventually heals the brunt of the pain, but time doesn't diminish the emotion attached to the [...]

Valentine Dangers – Keeping Your Cat Safe

Happy Valentine's Day to you and your beloved pets! It's a day we all cherish as it reminds us of keeping LOVE in our life which includes the unconditional love of the pets we love so dearly. Loving our pets also means keeping them safe from everyday household dangers that may be making their way into your home on this lovely holiday. Namely, CHOCOLATE and FLOWERS!  (other things we LOVE, right?!) Did you know that chocolate and certain types of flowers are toxic to cats?  I did not always know these things myself so I realize the importance of enlightening other pet parents. Chocolate Chocolate is a favorite gift to give and receive at Valentine's Day. After all, it's divinely delicious! But for cats, it can be quite dangerous if ingested. So please be sure to keep your chocolates in a place like a cabinet or drawer where your curious kitty cannot accidentally take a few bites and become sick. Read more about why chocolate is bad for your kitty. Flowers Flowers are wildly popular on Valentine's Day. I absolutely [...]

Don’t Wait To Think About Euthanasia and Cremation

I know NO pet parent wants to think about the day when their beloved fur baby will no longer be with them.I certainly didn't even though we all know it is an unavoidable and inevitable fact of life. But let me tell you that I believe it can take away some of the heavy burdens you will one day face at an extremely sensitive time when you need to be able to deal with your grief and focus on your pet's final moments. Speaking From Experience I speak from personal experience as my baby Simon's loss happened so quickly. That in the depths of my despair (and still being in shock and denial), I had to decide to assist him to sleep and what to do with his beautiful body. Those were some very tough, heartbreaking decisions to make at a time when I already was emotionally devastated. It's hard enough to go through the process of losing your pet, but to try and make such important decisions in the midst of an emotional tidal wave makes it worse. I [...]

Five Tips To Keep Your Cat Happy At Thanksgiving

Ready or not, the holidays are here! Many families with be staying at home for Thanksgiving hosting dinners. If this will be you and you are inviting guests over, we offer five tips to keep your cat happy (and safe!) at Thanksgiving. 1. Prepare your guests with some ground rules. With people coming and going into your home, setting some ground rules in advance with your guests will allow them to help you keep your cat safe and well. A couple of suggestions: Watch the door carefully when entering and exiting. Not only for cats who might be escape artists, but for kitty who might flee in response to the excitement and noise. As adorable as your kitty might be at begging, ask to please not feed her table scraps. 2. Make sure kitty has a quiet, safe space in which to retreat. Let your kitty decide if she wants to join the festivities (or not). Hopefully she will enjoy your company as much as you do, but having a retreat will reduce her stress. 3. Be on kitchen counter [...]

Why It’s Ok To Be Sad For The Loss Of Your Pet

It's that moment in time you never want to happen. But, inevitably, it does. That time came for me about a week ago for my beloved furbaby, Simon. It's one of the toughest things I have been through in quite some time. My love for my pets goes as deep as any love can go in the fibers of my heart. Simon was not just a cat...he was my companion, my lovebug, my baby. Losing him devastated me. I cried a lot, I cried hard, I still cry.  "All that we love deeply becomes a part of us." -Helen Keller I want you to know that it's ok to be sad for the loss of your precious pet, and here's why: They are more than just pets. They are cherished friends, loyal companions, our furry children who love us unconditionally. They are a huge part of our every day life - happy to see us when we come home, enjoying our affection and love, making us smile with their adorable personalities. We have a very special, very personal, unique bond [...]

Tips on Coping With Pet Loss Grief

As you may know, I recently experienced the loss of my beloved kitty, Simon (Read HERE). It hit me pretty hard as he was such a light in my life and it happened in a short period of time. I did not have a lot of time between the initial shock and the depression "stages" of grief, so it was quite an emotional train wreck. I also felt a little alone and lost in my journey, so I thought by sharing with you some of the things I learned in my own journey of the loss of Simon it would hopefully be helpful to others. Surround Yourself With Those That Understand Not everyone in your social circle will understand your devastation over your pet. But that does not by any means make it wrong. You just need to have your like-minded friends and family surrounding you the closest. I am lucky I have a few friends who really "get" my love for my fur babies. They still may not know exactly what to say, as there isn't a whole lot [...]

How To Always Get Your Lost Pet Home Safely

As a pet lover when I see a pet wandering the neighborhood streets, I can never just keep driving. Sometimes I try to approach the lost pet and they run away, but at least I know I tried. Although we offer pet sitting services just for cats, I still love and want the best for all animals. Yesterday while driving home from a pet sitting visit in my Smyrna neighborhood, I saw a dog loose in the street with no pet guardian in sight. I stopped to assess the situation. The dog was very friendly although dirty and very thin. She had a collar but no ID tag. No tag, no one to call! I did not want to just let her run loose in the street so I did the next logical thing and took her to a nearby veterinarian office to see if the dog was microchipped. I am happy to report that the dog was microchipped and the owner was located. A happy ending for this lost pooch. I feel that as pet parents, it is very important [...]
